[Wikilovesearth] page banner competition within WLE

Dear All,

As some of you may know, Wikivoyage uses page banners, the 7:1 panoramic
images placed at the top of each page. We are always short of such
images in general and of good banners with natural objects in
particular. This prompted us to organize the competition of page banners
as a satellite event during WLE. Last year we were running such a
competition for Russian destinations. It was quite successful delivering
88 excellent banners, many of them used nowadays across 17 language
editions of Wikivoyage. This year we extend the banner competition
worldwide:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017/banners

The idea is very simple: take your WLE photo, crop it to the 7:1 format,
and upload it separately as a page banner specifying the destination
where it goes. Our (Wikivoyage-based) jury will grade the uploads and
choose the winner who will receive a small prize.

We would be grateful if you disseminate information about this
competition among the participants. Posting short information with the
upload link on the page of your national competition would be great.
Having good page banners from your country not only improves its
coverage on Wikivoyage, but also draws more readers and editors, who may
eventually choose your country for their next trip.

We would also be grateful if the international team finds a way to
advertise this banner competition on the main WLE page and in the media.

Questions and comments are welcome. We look forward to receiving
excellent page banners this year!

Sincerely,
Alexander

Hello. Another question related to the banner. It seems that the banner of the contest (at least in Spain) is shown only for logged users. Is it the same in all countries? How could we change it to show it to all users?

Thanks

I believe it should be active for anonymous editors, according to

But there seems to be a fundraiser active too in Spain (today is last
day?), which may interfere.

I'm adding Seddon in cc, who may know more.

best check it with a campaign expert though! :)

My hypothesis would be easy to test by trying from the canary islands ;)
(where your banner is active, and the fundraiser banner is not)

best check it with a campaign expert though! :)

My hypothesis would be easy to test by trying from the canary islands ;) (where your banner is active, and the fundraiser banner is not)

I believe it should be active for anonymous editors, according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/wle_2017_es

But there seems to be a fundraiser active too in Spain (today is last day?), which may interfere.

I'm adding Seddon in cc, who may know more.

Best,
Lodewijk

Dear Santiago Navarro,

Are you talking about page banner at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017/banners

or about global page banner (aka Central Notice) that you see on top of each page in Wikipedia?

Best,
Alexander

Hello. Another question related to the banner. It seems that the banner of the contest (at least in Spain) is shown only for logged users. Is it the same in all countries? How could we change it to show it to all users?

Thanks

Asunto: [Wikilovesearth] page banner competition within WLE

Sincerely,
Alexander
